Baby heartbeat sound wave art

The first time you hear your baby's heartbeat is one of those moments you want to keep. A heartbeat recording turns into a very recognisable picture: a rhythm of regular peaks that is unmistakably a heart. Here is how to get the audio, shape it and turn it into a nursery print or a gift.

Hello, little oneHeartbeat at 20 weeks

Why heartbeat art is different

A song waveform is busy and irregular. A heartbeat is the opposite: a steady, repeating pair of beats with quiet space in between. In a picture, that becomes a clean, rhythmic pattern, and it looks good in a very minimal style with lots of space around it.

Because the shape is so simple, heartbeat prints rarely look cluttered. A single line of peaks across the middle of the page, with the date and a short name underneath, is often all you need.

Where to get a heartbeat recording

Ask first whether you are allowed to record. Many clinics are happy for you to capture the sound on your phone, some are not, and some will give you a file or a short video of the scan.

  • Your ultrasound appointment. Ask the sonographer if you may record the sound, and hold your phone close to the speaker. Quiet rooms give much cleaner audio.
  • A video of the scan. If the clinic gives you a video with sound, you can extract the audio track from it.
  • A home fetal doppler. Many people use one later in pregnancy. Use the manufacturer's guidance, and remember that a home device does not replace medical care.
  • A stethoscope-style recording of a newborn, or of a toddler's chest, for later keepsakes.

Shimga makes art, not medical devices. Do not use a waveform or a home device to judge your baby's health. If you are worried, speak to your midwife or doctor.

Preparing the audio

Heartbeat recordings usually include rustling, probe noise and your own voice. Trim a clean stretch of 10 to 30 seconds, where the beats are regular and nothing else is happening. A short, clean section produces better art than a long, noisy one.

If your file is a video, extract the audio first. The free video to audio tool on Shimga does that in your browser. Then add the file to the wave art editor with the baby heartbeat template.

Design ideas

  • A single centred line of beats in soft grey on white, with the scan date underneath.
  • A heart-shaped waveform in pink, blue, sage or a neutral, if you prefer something more playful.
  • A circular design for the nursery, with the baby's name in the middle.
  • A two-part print: the heartbeat at the first scan next to the baby's first cry or first laugh recorded after birth.
  • A pregnancy announcement: share the image in a card with the due date.

Sizes and framing

For a nursery wall, 8 by 10 inches (20 by 25 cm) or 11 by 14 inches (28 by 36 cm) are the easy sizes to frame. A5 or 5 by 7 inches fits a card or a baby shower gift. Choose a matte finish and a frame with a wide mat so the quiet shape of the heartbeat has room to breathe.

Gift ideas

  • A gift for the grandparents, who were not in the room.
  • A keepsake for a baby shower, made by a friend or a partner.
  • A card for the other parent on the day the baby arrives.
  • A framed print for the child to find years later, with the story of the day written on the back.

Questions

Can I use a heartbeat from a scan video?

Yes, if you have a video of the scan with sound. Extract the audio track, trim a clean section of regular beats and use that file in the editor.

How long should the heartbeat clip be?

Between 10 and 30 seconds is plenty. Long clips make the individual beats very thin, while a short one keeps each beat visible.
